During our trip to Texas for Christmas, we took a ride down to the beach.  I hadn’t seen it since Hurricane Ike came through, and it is now very different from the way it used to be.  Gilchrist is completely gone — no houses, no stores, nothing.  As you get further out on the peninsula, things get a bit better. There are pilings from the wrecked houses and the occasional cabin here and there that wasn’t completely washed away.  Some people are rebuilding, but it’s hard to imagine the place ever being the way it used to be.
